Yesterday morning we left Owensboro and drove through Kentucky to Alabama, via Nashville in Tennessee.
Kentucky was absolutely beautiful. It’s not really a place that gets mentioned much and I don’t know how much there is to do in Kentucky but the scenery is beautiful.
We stopped about halfway through our drive in Nashville, Tennesse. Sorry about all the dreadful photos taken through the car windscreen. I had to crop this particular one quite heavily so it’s a bit rubbish. (Check out the AT&T building on the left though – I thought it looked like Batman!)
We went to a place called Arnold’s for lunch. It’s got a couple of James Beard awards and is an institution for Southern food. There’s always a queue out the door too so you know it’s got to be good. I was a bit sceptical at first as it’s basically a canteen. They are well known for doing ‘meat and three’ which is basically their meat of the day with your chosen sides. We both opted for fried chicken and mac & cheese and I had green beans and Nick had sweet potato mash. (I haven’t put any pictures up because it didn’t look very appetising but trust me, it was delicious!) We also had two servings of pie, chocolate pie and chess pie, which tastes a bit like flan and treacle tart mixed together.
After that we carried on driving to Decatur, Alabama. When we arrived we headed straight for Big Bob Gibson’s to try their chicken and ribs. And more pie. This time it was lemon meringue.
