Big Sur, California

This is a video I made last night from video clips that we took on our trip to Big Sur, California in April this year.

Although I’m sure YouTube will probably take it down before anyone gets a chance to see it because of the music. Stupid Facebook wouldn’t let me upload it.

Anyway, sorry it’s so shaky and I’m a rubbish camera woman!

Enjoy!

San Francisco – part 4 – Big Sur

I’ve been so excited to tell you about my perfect day in Big Sur. For starters, we weren’t sure we would be able to get there at all as there was lots of rain in the area earlier in the year and part of the road had fallen off the side of the cliff and into the ocean so there was no way of getting there. Luckily, the road re-opened on the day that we landed in SF. So, we drove to Monterey on Monday and got there around 5pm after stopping in Santa Cruz for a spot of shopping and stopping several times on the side of the road to buy some insanely cheap strawberries. Our motel is opposite a really cool shopping centre which has a Pottery Barn which is the best store ever! I nearly screamed with excitement when I picked up the latest copy of their catalogue and saw on the front that they will shortly be shipping to over 70 countries!!! That’s going to be very dangerous for my bank balance!!

Now, to put things in perspective a little bit, last year when we did the Highway 1 California drive we drove through Big Sur in one day and the weather looked like this:

Cloudy foggy Big Sur May 2010

However, we had odd pockets of sunshine which allowed us to see the incredible beauty of Big Sur so I knew that I wanted to return again this year.

I cannot describe how happy I was on Tuesday morning when I drew back the curtains to reveal a completely clear and perfectly sunny day!

So we got in the car and headed straight to Big Sur Bakery for breakfast. Big Sur Bakery make the best food I have ever tasted. Ever. I’ve been to several Michelin starred restaurants and none of them come close to this place! For breakfast we had a slice of potato fritatta, a slice of herb encrusted quiche and a strawberry rock cake.

After sitting around for an hour or two taking in the view we headed down to Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park for a trek around some redwood forests. Unfortunately, the trail that I wanted to take to the top of one of the mountains was closed but we walked the ‘Canyon trail’ through the redwoods to a waterfall and it was extremely lovely. There was also a mini trail towards the beach to another waterfall. Can I just say that the redwood trees were so freakin huge!! Like seriously unbelievably enormous! I remember watching nature shows on tv when I was little and just thinking that I would never get to see redwood trees, it just seemed so impossible at the time so I was almost tearful at certain points of our forest walk! Sad I know!

Following our little forest adventure we went to a place called Nepenthe for lunch. The food was okay, nothing on Big Sur Bakery but the view is breathtaking and can’t be beaten.

After that we went on to Pfeiffer State Park which wasn’t quite as good as Julia Pfeiffer State Park but I did get to climb a mountain in the end. Think it was a 3 mile round walk so it wasn’t too bad and the view was excellent.

We had halibut to start followed by the most incredible aubergine pizza ever. Even though we were both stuffed we couldn’t possibly leave without having dessert so Nick had lemon cake with huckleberries and I went for a blueberry tart with vanilla creme anglaise. Obviously, it was amazing. Then we drove back to Monterey as the sun set over the ocean. Literally, the perfect day.
